I used several functions on twitter.
I used private messages to communicate with my friends. It is much easier to use the Internet to communicate with my friends because it is free and does not cost anything.
I used what you call a 'tweet' to 'tag' my friends to communicate publicly. This means anyone who 'follows' me or my friend can see our conversations. This can be useful to relay messages about school or our social life to all of our friends, for example one friend can tag me and another can comment regarding our conversations and join in if they wish to do so.
